From the type pad of the president

Dear

Wow!  There are  lot of changes here at Roaring Women! So many in fact that I won't be able to tell you in one newsletter.  One thing I have always been determined to do is to listen to what our members and subscribers have to say.

I want to make the the place for you to come to get the information, encouragement, support and ideas you need to stay inspired and excited about running your own business. But I also know that it takes time to run a business - so I am working hard at keeping the newsletters brief and to the point.

Don't miss the 2 great bits of information on the lower half of the newsletter on how to beat the recession blues. One article is by a National Journalist!

Roaring Women Web site - Easier than ever to navigate!

The good thing about the web site is that there are so many resources.  Unfortunately many resources and services were difficult to find.  So I did some house cleaning - and reorganized things so that there are easier to find!

Under services you will only see mail headers: Business Services, Coaching Services, ROAR Boards, Member Service and Our Experts. These title pages are linked to 40 more pages - each with one service on them.  This will make it much easier to find what you need!

Meetings now belong to YOU!

All our dinner meetings are now licensed out to local leaders in your community.  This means that you will have someone locally who can respond to the needs that you as a business owner has.  If you would like a special topic covered or have something special to present yourself - you can now just speak to your Regional Director.  Our RD's are creative, responsive and knowledgeable - so be prepared to be amazed by the value that the meeting will now offer.

Information and Inspiration

Each week we will feature an expert writer and a success story.  If you have something to share - be sure to let et us know and we will gladly feature your story or information.

Member's Area

Finally - don't forget the members' area. There is a lot of information there for you - and more added on aa regular basis.  This week-end I will be adding a five minute vignette on how to recognize SPAM and PHISHING emails.

Remember - what you think upon grows... what will you focus on?

Mandie Crawford and the Roaring Women Team

She's doing all the right stuff!

Recently I have had the opportunity to coach a member who joined about a year ago.  She has been an inspiration to me - and a shining example of how to move a business forward regardless of the obstacles.  (I will call her Sally)

Sally's Story (a true story from Alberta)

Sally started her business about 18 months ago.  She had taken some industry specific training and had experience in what she was offering.  She had partnered with another woman who had complimentary skills.

However before hard times even hit - Sally experienced several personal losses, and in addition was having trouble finding enough business to support her spending let alone enough to support herself.  Sally's last resort was to try coaching. (Sally had never experienced coaching before)  Her first session was at the beginning of the recession.

Her partner did not partake in the coaching - citing lack of money or time.  Sally went forward anyway.

Sally's first realization was not that her services were over priced ( as some potential clients had told her) but that the right customer had not yet found here.  SO she began focusing on how to target her market.  In addition Sally worked on her thinking, read several suggested books and listened to some great cd's suggested by the coach.

Each coaching session, Sally had homework - which she did faithfully.  She also continued her networking.

This week was Sally's last coaching session.  She was so excited to me that not only did she have thousands of dollars in business lined up, but that several larger companies were now subcontracting her services.

The good news?  Sally did not let the recession determine the results of her business and marketing efforts.  In the middle of a recession her and her partner are discussing how they can expand their business.

Did you know that the great depression made more millionaires then any other period of time. These were struggling businesses that made great decisions in tough times.  Have you ever thought about coaching to help your business?

All the studies (including our most recent survey) show us that entrepreneurs and business owners who receive coaching have a 50% better chance of succeeding in business than business owners who do not get the advice that they so desperately need.

Don't make the same mistakes thousands of business owners and entrepreneurs have made by thinking you have to do everything alone.

Guest Article - By Rick Spence (Financial Post) 10 Success Strategies for Hard Times

How will you get  through the recession?

Canadian businesses are facing hard times. Fortunately, I think there are many fixes – some quick, some longer-term – that entrepreneurial businesses can make to ward off the worst of the recession.

Here are 10 quick ideas to think about:

1. Measure your marketing. Today’s electronic media offer huge advantages over old-style advertising (print, direct mail, etc.). Web sites, e-newsletters, pay-per-click ads, even blogging and Twittering, all allow you to quickly test, measure and refine your messages and your offers. It’s low-cost, targeted marketing that doubles as research.

2. Leverage partnerships. No company succeeds alone. Form strategic, marketing and referral alliances with supply-chain partners, neighbouring businesses, networking colleagues, customers, friends and possibly competitors.

Cash Flow Woes?  Where do you spend - and where do you cut back?

Counting your pennies?

Ok, so we are all experiencing a squeeze on the bank account.  But how do you decide where to cut back?  And what should we be spending our money on?  (Read more here on where you can actually save money in your business)

Several years ago when people were reading at "Smart people finish rich"  (the David Bach Series) I heard the term "Latte Factor"

What is your "Latte Factor"?  This question really  means how much money do you have jingling around in your purse or pocket that you are willing to part with, without a second thought?

How many of us slide by the local coffee shop, and run in for a quick 'Latte Frappe double whipped creamy chocolate mocha beverage' - and because we have worked hard today choose a 'grande'?  For some of us - it is a once a week treat that we never think twice about stopping for.  Cha-ching!  There went $5.50!  That is what we call the Latte factor.

When people have to give up their small indulgences - the begin to panic.  It's easy to put off the big trip - things will get better after all.  And the hot tub purchase can wait.  But give up my Latte?  Noooooo!  Read more here
