When I first spoke to Deneen it was very clear that she is a woman who knows what she wants in both her personal life and her business life and she knows how to achieve success in both areas.
Deneen excitedly told me that she is engaged to be married this summer. She will be step-mom to two children aged 11 and 19 and her fiancée will be step-dad to Fred the 120 pound lap dog. This marriage comes full circle for Deneen and her fiancée. According to Deneen she met him when she was 20 only to part some time later. Much to her surprise, on a BC ferry many years later, they reconnected. The rest, as they say, is history. (or herstory.)
The team at McVagh Cunningham Group Ltd consists of six women who work together to provide personalized financial planning in the largest all-female financial planning firm in Victoria. They help clients understand and manage the emotional as well as the financial side of personal and corporate planning. Together, they provide their clients with more wisdom and perception than a single advisor. Deneen has an obvious passion for her work. She often puts in 60 hour weeks, not because she has to but because she loves to. Deneen loves the satisfaction she gets in helping people clarify their finances and the ability to help people make informed decisions. Deneen and her group have come to realize that women take a very different approach to their finances than men do. Being a team of all women offers their clients a unique and personal perspective on creating and managing wealth.
I asked Deneen why she decided to join the Victoria branch of Roaring Women. Her reply did not surprise me. "I saw an ad in a magazine. I checked out the website and decided to go to a meeting. I was looking for a group of professional women who were really committed to making their business grow. Some of the business meetings I have gone to are more product based or mlm ventures. I want to meet like minded women and I feel that Roaring Women will provide me with that opportunity."
Deneen is not a woman who sits back and waits for things to happen and joining Roaring Women is proof positive of that.
One final question before we say goodbye. "What's your favourite thing to do?" I can see her face light up all the way over the phone lines from Victoria to Toronto: "Boating. We have an 18 foot high performance speedboat. We run it as fast as we can: the wind blowing in my hair and the speed so fast it scares that pants off me: now that's fun! "
Indeed.
As I mull over my words for Deneen's story the word risk comes up. That's what Deneen does. She ensures, with passion and pride, that your financial future is not put into a risky position, that you are safe and comfortable and able to enjoy your future. Risk....only on the high seas for this woman.
