Kathy Grant’s business, LogoMotion Printing Services and Promotional Products, was born from desire, not necessity. After 15 years in the industry, working for someone else, she decided it was time for a break after her husband of 36 years was diagnosed with and recovered from prostate cancer. Kathy says, “It was time to re-evaluate where my life was going.”
The thought of stepping outside the box was a little unnerving to Kathy, as is only natural when considering a major life change. But, as is often the case, fate stepped in and provided reassurance.
Kathy was considering taking a program offered through EI for starting a business, but encountered clients she had dealt with in her previous position who asked what she was doing these days. When Kathy mentioned she was contemplating starting her own printing service and promotional business the response she received was overwhelmingly the same, ‘Where you are, that’s where we’re going.’
LogoMotion picked up steam with very little effort on Kathy’s part. Her reputation preceded her; clients knew they could trust and rely on Kathy to find exactly what they needed, at a price within their budget.
With a successful year behind her, she has built a clientele of small business and solo entrepreneurs who rely on her expertise. Kathy takes time with each customer to determine their specific need and budget saying, “If my customer is looking for drink ware I will offer three choices, not just one, I make it easier for them by doing the legwork,” adding, “Some of my customers want quality items in small numbers or items for a one-time-event, but don’t have a big budget. I search my supplier’s clearance sections to meet their requests.”
Kathy shops for her customers the same way she shops for herself; to find the best quality at the lowest price stating, “Its fun to find the right products for my clients!” The sincerity of this comment rings loud and clear in her voice.
Networking is a new avenue of exploration for Kathy and LogoMotion. After attending a few networking meetings she says, “I found them too structured, too high powered for me.” Then she happened to read that Roaring Women was coming to her city, Victoria, B.C. in September.
Kathy has always believed that if seeds are planted [in business] and properly nurtured they will grow and prosper. When she arrived for the meeting she received a package of forget-me-not seeds and listened to Mandie speak on what the seeds represented.
Kathy decided then and there Roaring Women was a perfect fit for her and LogoMotion. She says, “I had a good feeling, a nice buzz being there. Roaring Women has a better pace for networking.”
Kathy says she doesn’t want to be a major contender in the industry; her desire is to provide her existing and new clients with prompt and honest customer service saying, “Satisfied clients make all the difference to your business continuing to be successful.”
When making the decision to start her business, LogoMotion, it was with the intent of having flexibility of time. To allow for more time to spend with her family and friends; travel with her husband; to become involved, once again, with volunteer work. Kathy’s laughter is contagious as she says, “I want to work 7/24, not 24/7. I feel like I have a life still to live.” Kathy says proudly and confidently, “I’m having fun with it!
