Sheila Musgrove
The Game of Hide & Seek: A Recruiter’s Perspective
After meeting with Sheila Musgrove you know that’s what her focus is. She is certainly a ‘don’t sweat the small stuff’ kind of person. But on the other hand she has an uncanny way of knowing just what the big stuff is.

Both of us see very little need to take notes on who she is and where she is going. In fact, chances are if you are not careful you will catch her energy and direction and find yourself running right beside her.

With Sheila, what you see is what you get – along with a few extra little surprises along the way. Her fiery red hair and mischievous look are only a preview to the package that this firecracker is.

Sheila grew up in the small town of Hinton, Alberta, moving on to her first big city of Red Deer to study for a Legal Assistant Diploma at Red Deer College. A people person with an ‘anything is possible’ attitude, halfway through her program at the college, she ran for student government.

Surprising only herself she became the Vice President of the Student Association for one year and then President for the next year. She had the responsibility of a million dollar budget that added to the invaluable experience of managing people and policies for what could be compared to a large corporation.

After the amazing experiences gained in Student Government, she went on to obtain her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Law and the Liberal Arts from the University of Calgary.

Sheila launched her sales and corporate career within the Financial Services Call Centre sector while in university and immediately thereafter she was offered the opportunity to lead a team of her former colleagues.

She was fast-tracked within the organization, eventually leading one of the largest growth departments with an organization of 65+ staff members.

"I worked closely with a number of staffing firms to help with the tremendous growth of my team – who knew that was going to be the natural segue into the staffing business?"

It precisely was – she was selected based on her high volume use and client perspective of the recruitment industry, along with her corporate sales and call centre experiences to launch directly into her first foray into the staffing industry.

She took that spirit and an incredible talent in sales that no doubt comes from her sincere interest in people, to work for a Global staffing firm. Using her sales, leadership and people skills, she successfully climbed the ranks within the organization, from her first role as Branch Manager of the Calgary team to expanding responsibilities including Provincial Manager, Alberta, Senior Operations Manager for Western Canada, before being invited to join the Executive Team for Canada responsible for the Corporate Sales Organization.

After living on an airplane for almost two years, she decided to turn her attention to Consulting before eventually starting TAG Recruitment Group.

When considering the name and identity of her new company, she came up with the idea for TAG while driving down the highway – the goal was to be unique and memorable, all with a sense of fun. The idea of recruiting is just like a game of hide and seek – as a recruiter we know where the best candidates are hiding, we seek them out, and TAG they are it! That idea has turned into one of TAG’s trademarked phrases, “Where are you hiding? We’d really like to find you. TAG.”

“Both my parents were part time entrepreneurs” she explained to me, “and maybe that was where I got the drive and determination to start my own company.”. The idea of opening my own company has been in the back of my mind as long as I can remember.

She and her husband were involved in a few different entrepreneurial ventures, but none of them were ones that would meet the criteria of long-term and solid revenue generating! So back to the drawing board. Sheila shared that countless weekends were spent just brainstorming on what type of business they could open together.

"Some of them were really fun…we even looked at buying a vineyard with some friends, but the multi-million dollar price-tag was a little out of reach for us all!" Sheila continued - "Wine importing, event planning, training, franchising…the list went on! I knew that the right opportunity was going to come along – I just had to keep my eyes open and keep building my personal and business experiences."

It is obvious that family is important to her to anyone who listens to her. She speaks admiringly of her husband and his entrepreneurial work. As she explains his work with Biodiesel, which is an environmentally friendly fuel made from recycled oils – yes, even French Fry oil! He is in the process of setting up a massive production facility in Calgary later this year.

“My goal is to have every vehicle in my company running on Biodiesel – in our business, we are out and about a lot, by running environmentally based fuels, it is simply our way of leaving a lighter footprint and yet another way that TAG is truly unique.

TAG Recruitment is celebrating its first year in business on April 18th, 2006, and what a year it has been! Sheila offers her perspective, “We’ve continued to distinguish ourselves in the market as a firm of choice for many of the city’s top companies by offering our experience and creative options. In our first year, we’ve placed hundreds of candidates and well over 120+ sales professionals – which is a strong niche for TAG, along with professionals, supervisors and long term contract employees.”

TAG offers both permanent placement as well as contract/temporary placements. We have been very flattered to have been invited to work with clients in Edmonton, Vancouver and Toronto – all based from their office in Calgary.

“We are very grateful for a tremendously successful first year of business – our success has been attributed to a very hands-on approach, creating solutions that are customized to our client needs, and simply keeping our eyes open for great talent.”

She is presently finishing her first book on "Successful Interviewing" geared towards individuals starting their careers, and the "do's and don'ts gained from close to 15 years in recruitment!
