Caroline Lawrence
Helping herself and others to a healthier life is a reflex
At age 59 Caroline Lawrence looks back at a life full of changes, chances taken, disappointing times and obstacles which she has or is about to overcome.

Caroline’s life had just begun when she was diagnosed with a chronic medical condition - rheumatic fever - at the age of twelve. From her early teenage years and onward, she had to cope with and fight against the disease, taking penicillin for almost a decade. Due to her poor health, Caroline was unable to work in the profession she liked most: nursing. “I always wanted to be a nurse and help people, but due to rheumatic fever, it was impossible for me to become a nurse” Caroline explains. More than thirty years later, her urge to help people is also a major focus of her newly founded company ‘Happy Foot’. Now a reflexologist the owner of her own business, she treats patients of all age groups. In reflexology she has found a job which is helpful and rewarding for her and others.

In her early twenties, Caroline married a farmer from New Zealand, left Milo, her little hometown in southern Alberta, and followed her husband to the other end of the globe. There, her joy was working together and helping on the farm, milking the dairy cattle and feeding the pigs. “There are a lot of things you do when you love someone,” Caroline admits with a laugh.

Caroline left New Zealand after 37 years. She is looking back on a life dictated by the farm and her illness, a complicated pregnancy, the loss of one of her twins, and deteriorating health due to rheumatic fever and her affected lungs. But a turning point for the better came, while she was still in poor health.

“I met a lady who helped her sick husband with reflexology and she used it on me I felt better and calmer. And I felt this was the direction I needed to take for myself", Caroline remembers. “At the same time I was introduced to Noel Maxwell, a Master Herbalist".

She started to learn reflexology and much more about herbs and vitamins and began to treat herself, her children, as well as her friends. Once her three daughters were older, Caroline began taking courses in reflexology and earned a certificate in reflexology from a college in New Zealand. “It was mostly personal experience and how reflexology has helped me that made me pursue this alternative healing method” says Caroline.

In 1998, she started taking a product called 'Transfer Factor' under the direction of her naturopath . In a short time she could feel something kicking in working for her body like nothing else had. She started breathing easier, no longer wheezed all day, and had more energy. "I tell you, I was impressed" she say energetically. "I was told 4Life Transfer Factor was a unique and highly effective supplement formulated to support and improve the immune system function. And I believe it!"

Caroline has practiced reflexology for over a decade. Practicing on herself she saw her health gradually improving. And as she continued to increase her knowledge of reflexology and its combination with herbs, vitamins, and supplements to increase the immune system her health continued to improve. Caroline realized that reflexology is very meaningful to her and that “there is always something new to learn about the human body and a possibility to expand your horizon in order to help people feel better,” she adds.

In 2002, with her return to Canada, she decided to turn her passion for reflexology into a business. To make a living, Caroline obtained a certificate in care giving from Calgary’s Bow Valley College while she slowly began to expand her work as a reflexologist. Six months ago, she applied for a license as a reflexologist in Canada and since then, she is working solely in the profession she has chosen for herself.

With an ocean between herself and her old life, Caroline was able to achieve the professional success she has dreamed of by starting her business, ‘Happy Foot’. She has been able to get to know her eight siblings in their later stages of life, and she and her husband have started to work on their relationship.

Since Caroline started her own business, she has seen amazing changes in her patients. “The reflexology can eliminate some medication, especially for depressed people, and is a means of relaxation and a better immune system for cancer patients. It helps increase the circulation, relaxes, and supports a healthy lifestyle together with supplements and a healthy diet,” Caroline explains her all-embracing approach.

“This work is truly fulfilling for me - it means a lot to me to be able to help others,” says Caroline. And after winning the upper hand in her fight against rheumatic fever and fulfilling her dream of working as a reflexologist, Caroline is now hoping to build a successful practice and then eventually to return to New Zealand, where her children and grandchildren are waiting.
