My fondest memory of cleaning windows is when we lived in Millet and I’d take all the windows pains out to clean them. The boys thought it such great fun because I’d lift them up and they’d climb out the window then run back in the house to do it again. Of course the windows were on the main floor and they didn’t have far to jump. To them it was a long way down. 

 

Mom taught us to clean windows with newspaper, water and vinegar.  When she taught us it was the environmentally way to clean. You to? It did work; we wouldn’t have any streaks.

 

Recently  came across the following advice in the book “Talking Dirty With The Queen Of Clean” by Linda Cobb

 

“NO matter what you have heard about cleaning with newspaper don’t use it. Never use newspaper to clean windows. It is dirty and messy, leaving newsprint all over white window trim and paint.”

Isn’t it great to now have a new alternative!

 

Well I have been reading up on the best way to clean windows and they all suggest a combo; vinegar and water, cornstarch and water, and for really dirty windows TSP and water. The problem is they are not all streak free and you can’t clean windows on a nice sunny day with the sun shining directly on the windows. Our first hot spring days are here, YIPPEE! Are you looking at your windows and dreading the time and effort it takes to clean them. Does getting out the squeegee, windex, multitudes of paper towels or rags excite you?

 

I didn't think so. Well I want to share with you my window cleaning system that has saved me time and moneyover and over again.

 

You’ll need

ü      1 pail of hot water

ü      1 old rag or old enviro cloth

ü      1 Enviro cloth

ü      1 Window cloth

ü      1 White Netted Dish Cloth

ü      1 Dust Mitt

ü      1 Spray bottle –optional

 

 1.  Use the dust mitt and/or white netted dish cloth to clean the dirt out of the grooves. A favorite little tool I use is the flat end of a tupperware orange peeler. It fits perfectly in the slots and using the white netted dish cloth I can pick up all the dust and dirt out of the corner of the grooves. If you vacuum or dust them regularly you may not need to do this.

2.  Wet your enviro cloth (hot water only) and wipe down the inside windows. Dry with the window cloth. It’s that easy.

3.  Now it’s time to go outside YEH. If the windows are very very dirty I wipe them with the old rag first. The enviro cloth holds soo much dirt and I want to save it for the finer dust, fly poop etc. Wipe with your envirocloth followed by your window cloth. (you shouldn’t need to change the water)

4.  Clean the outside of the screens with by dusting with the mitt first then with the wet enviro cloth. If you'd rather you can take them out and wash the screen with the garden hose first (take a break and have a water fight) or using the white netted dish cloth (wet) clean the built up of dust and dirt around the edges.

5.  Put all the windows and screens back and you are done! Streak Free and easy.

Never use steel wool on tinted glass. Use the white netted dish cloth instead.
